One of the most important issues raised at a social level during the pre-revolutionary period in France in the 18th century was undoubtedly the religious one, with the radical change of attitude of a large part of the people towards the Church, the clergy and the concept of religion in general. This study by Athanasios Gallos presents the way in which an institution that enjoyed social supremacy for centuries, mainly on the basis of customary law, was transformed during the era of the mercantilist monarchical feudal state into a legal order, the first of the kingdom and a of the country's two strongest economic, intellectual and ideological forces, but at the same time paving the way for the Secularized France of the 20th century.
