Little is known in the Greek literature about the kontotieri, the infamous warrior adventurers who starred in Italy in the period, mainly, between the 14th and 15th centuries. Fighting in the service of various rulers, the contotiers developed the concept of mercenary and with their main weapons of violence and cynicism, they succeeded and rose to the highest offices of their time, while at the same time they won untold riches and immense glory. The contotieri were, above all, a creation of their time and historical environment, dominated for centuries by conflicts, strife and fragmentation, elements that were masterfully exploited to impose their presence. However, the interdependent relationship they developed with their political and social environment was also the cause that led both them, and of course the Italian peninsula, to decline and subjugation. Nevertheless, their exploits – some real and others bordering on legend – left behind stories and narratives that have inspired philosophers and writers of every era. And the riches they accumulated financed some of the most wonderful works of the Renaissance, which still stand unchanged in different parts of Italy, to remind us of their brief but indelible passage through history.
A book that thoroughly explores a fascinating and unknown page in history, the one written by the mercenary Contotieri during the late Middle Ages in Italy.
