Technocrats

technocrats

It is April 23, 2010 and Evangelos Yiannopoulos is watching the GAP speech in Kastellorizo from his hospital room. The speech ends and the 92-year-old politician looks up at the sky, exclaims "My Andrea, your son is an excellent child, but like his face is going to do things", and frantically hits the button for the nurse to come.

"What happened to you;"

"My graduation and a taxi."

"But, Mr. Yiannopoulos, your situation..."

"I don't suffer anything, for the others you should be afraid. I sign wherever you want. My graduation and a taxi."

"I'm calling your attending physician."

"The discharge to sign, tell him."

Half an hour later, he enters the taxi in set pajamas, a robe and serum.

"At the PASOK offices, in Harilaou Trikoupi".

"But they've been transferred to Hippocrates."

"Good, you go with me to Harilaou Trikoupi and let anyone who wants to go to Hippocrates."

He enters the old offices of PASOK. Tsovolas and Laliotis arrive almost at the same time, and they all head to Andreas' old office, which the owner didn't dare touch, even though the offices moved about a year ago. The phones start.

First to fellow socialists in Greece and then abroad. They work through the night to come up with a plan to keep control of the economy (ie control of the country) in the hands of the government.

The next morning they meet with George.

"We want to take over the negotiation with the partners."

"But that can't be done."

Yiannopoulos takes the floor "My child, you are still young, you must understand that negotiation and the middle path are not for all issues. Some weeds you have to chop or they will suffocate you. We gave the people bread, infrastructure and equal opportunities, they will not take it from us now for the money, no matter how much it is. The country will be destroyed and we together. Let us who know take it.

"But how will it be done?" You're not even elected!”

“Why, are these numbers elected that they will bring here to bully us? Technocrats present them. Are they technocrats? Technocrats too! We need a signature and leave the rest up to us. If we don't succeed, the responsibility will be ours, you change us and make whatever agreement you want".

"Very well. But you'll only get one chance"

(The above was just one of the stories of green sun and socialist madness included in the new collection of short stories entitled "Old PASOK - The Orthodox 2: The Leader in Crisis Greece", which envisions what a -surreal- present would be like... if He were still among us.)
