Ο Athanasios Pernath is a diamond craftsman living in the Prague Ghetto, working on all kinds of antiques. From one moment to the next he begins to travel in strange dreams and in one of them, a stranger brings him a book whose cover needs repairing. Pernath unwittingly reads it and from then reality and fantasy become one. He sees otherworldly visions, otherworldly figures dance before his eyes and reaches the point where he can see the face of the infamous Golem around him.

In this chaos of visions, hallucinations and magic, various figures will appear around him to help or harm him. Zoach describes the neighborhood's past to him, Hillel and Miriam help him understand his inner self, while Wassertrum probably wants his bad. Between these and the rest of the characters, Rozina, a fourteen-year-old prostitute who stirs up every male in town with her red hair, makes a fleeting appearance at intervals.

Reality and dream invade each other, with pervasive esotericism and the monstrous form of the Golem, immaterial and material, real and fleeting, tangible and undefined, dominating the depths of dark Prague. Author Biography

Ο Gustav Meyrink was born in 1868 in Austria-Hungary and is still considered one of the most important German-speaking prose writers of esoteric literature and fantasy. He spent most of his life in Prague, which inspired him to write The Golem (1915), a work in which he brings to life the local Jewish legend about a mysterious creature-protector of the Jewish community. In 1892, just as he was preparing to commit suicide, a stranger leaves a book on his doorstep about life after death. This event turned his attention completely to the study of Kabbalah, Theosophy, Eastern mysticism and yoga. Until his death in 1932, he wrote many more stand-alone stories and novels, such as Walpurgisnacht (Witches' Night, 1917) mixing the fantastic with the theories and practice of the occult. His books were banned during the 3rd century Reich, because of their content. In recent years, however, his work has returned to the reader's fore and is now regarded as one of the classics writers of his kind.
