A philosophical and socio-political journey through time as a compass for the future
This paper studies the history and development of the concept of "patriotism" from ancient Greece (where the concept was known as "philopatry") to the present day, emphasizing the promotion of the concept during the Age of Nations -states. She presents the views of various thinkers on the positive and negative aspects of patriotism, analyzes the various forms of patriotism, such as Rorty's 'critical patriotism', while also providing her own definition of the concept of 'patriotism'. At the same time, he studies the effect of the concept on the territories of the former USSR, from the time of the Russian Empire to the present day, observing the course that the Soviet ideology had, the change of its character from "internationalist" to "patriotic" thanks to the events of the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945) and the effect that patriotism had on the events that led to the fall of the Eastern superpower. In addition, the work presents various aspects that have a particularly important role in the modern conflicts taking place in the territories of the former USSR. Finally, it studies the effect of patriotism in the Cypriot context, bearing in mind the Cypriot problem, while also posing pedagogical questions concerning the teaching of History in a Cyprus in the post-solution era.
