Ο Arthur Conan Doyle (author father of Sherlock Holmes) was born on May 22, 1859 in Edinburgh into a wealthy Irish family. He studied medicine and took his degree from the University of Edinburgh in 1881. He worked as a surgeon on a whaling ship and also as a medical officer on a steamer plying between Liverpool and West Africa. He then settled in Portsmouth on the south coast of England and divided his time between medicine and writing.
