The population of the Earth has been concentrated in a single, gigantic state to survive, after millennia of evolution and expansion in space. Civilization follows the footsteps of ancient history and develops under the oppression and intolerance of a powerful priesthood. Machines, having long since acquired self-sufficiency and independence, reproduce, molding themselves in the image and likeness of their creator. No one can tell artificial intelligence from humans anymore.
Once, a revolution begins in the slums of the Eastern Sector and the machines rise up, asking their masters for Peace, Equality, Brotherhood. The hand of God, as the priests say, is stretched out to stop the conflict. Saul, the chief inquisitor, is called upon to judge a heretic brought before him by the temple guards. They call him Teacher and his speech is not at all divisive or intolerant. As if he had been ready for a long time, struggling with his own heretical ghosts, the judge hears him preach before him the values that led the multitudes to his steps, frightening the established order.
