Early 10th century. The throne of Constantinople becomes a widower as the young King Leo dies unexpectedly. His son and successor is only one year old. So the strongest men in the empire are looking for the most suitable co-emperor.
The patriarch Nikolaos, uncle of the little rightful king, wants someone capable and honest, to safeguard his nephew's legacy without sidelining him. Rector Michael Duronis, the most powerful senator, wants someone capable but uneducated, a stranger to power, someone who can impress and manipulate. The logothetes of the street Theodotos wants someone with authority but simplistic, enough to implement without problems the decisions that he and his bureaucrats will make on his behalf.
The three of them would probably not agree on anything, but they agree on the person of the co-emperor. Nikiforos Dryenos seems ideal. Invincible general, hero of the empire and at the same time of humble origin and almost illiterate. It has all the qualifications and offers all the guarantees. They will hand him absolute power, just before he takes it himself. They will regret it very quickly. Maybe they won't catch that either.
