1795 is a landmark year for the Gianniotis Enlightener Athanasios Psalidas. It is about the period when he decides to return to his homeland, carrying years of valuable performances, but also the rich knowledge, which he acquired during his many years of stay abroad, mainly in Vienna. His impetuosity and writing estrus are at their peak. Inspired, now, by strong feelings of progressivism but also of anti-clericalism, the Gianniot scholar has managed to taste the bitter glass of censorship of his ideas, through the destruction of the translation of the Logic of the German philosopher FC Baumeister, which he himself had edited. To blame for this development were two followers of Evgenios Voulgaris, who were strongly disturbed by the comments of the Introduction, which in reality had been written by Psalidas, now openly turning against his old teacher. The cancellation of the circulation of printed copies of the book in 1795 caused the explosion of Psalidas, who decided in the same year to publish his work Kalokinimata, launching his arrows against Voulgaris and his two followers.
Kalokinimata reveals to the modern reader an unseen story of intrigue and philosophical debates from the troubled pre-revolutionary years, at the same time revealing Psalidas' undivided support for the values of Right Reason, the revolutionary spirit and the prevalence of scientific thought in the face of superstition.
The edition is interspersed with a multi-page and highly detailed foreword and introduction by Professor of Philosophy Ilias Tempelis, which illuminate every aspect of our fascinating history, presenting, at the same time, for the first time to the scholarly readership, unknown aspects of the whole case.
