Ο Phineas Taylor Barnum (1810-1891) was one of the most famous American businessmen of the 19th century, known for founding the "Greatest Show on Earth," the Barnum & Bailey Circus. He was born in Bethel, Connecticut, and from an early age showed his entrepreneurial skills, organizing raffles and small shows.
In 1835, Barnum purchased and exhibited Joyce Heth, an African-American slave who claimed to be the 161-year-old former nurse of George Washington. This exploit, although controversial, was the beginning of his career in the entertainment industry. In 1841, he purchased the American Museum in New York, which he quickly transformed into a center for bizarre and spectacular exhibits and performances.
In 1871, Barnum founded his first circus, which later merged with James Bailey's circus to create the legendary Barnum & Bailey Circus. Barnum was known for promoting oddities such as Charles Stratton, known as "General Tom Thumb", and the conjoined sisters Chang and Eng Bunker.

Despite his success, Barnum was also active in politics, serving as mayor of Bridgeport, Connecticut, and championing social issues such as the abolition of slavery.

Barnum died in 1891, leaving behind a great legacy in the entertainment and business worlds. His principles in entertainment and promotion continue to influence the industry to this day.
