Perhaps the most mysterious deity of ancient Greek mythology, the night goddess Hecate, has been little researched precisely because of her relationship with the forces of night, magic and even death.
In this monograph, the psychologist and writer George Ioannidis looks back at the entire ancient literature to illuminate the different faces of the goddess: the dreaded witch of the Argonautic texts and the Greek Magical Papyri, the erasemate companion of Demeter in the Eleusinian drama and also the savior of souls, as it emerges in the Chaldean Rites.
At the same time, some side issues related to the theology of Hekate are examined and concern the relationship of the goddess with the witches of Thessaly and Love Magic, the symbolism of the light emanating from the sacred caves, the relationship of death with music, dance with movement of the stars, the philosophical meaning behind the rapture of Persephone and the value of religious ritual as an ontological turn in the experience of truth, which transcends everything human and ephemeral.
In man's search for the divine, Hekate emerges as the key to the whole world, the path followed by everyone who wants to return their soul from this Hades. For the shadow obscures the truth, while the torch of the goddess purifies it.
