Theoretical Mechanics is historically the oldest branch of Theoretical Physics. Its beginnings are placed in 1687, the year of publication of Isaac Newton's work "Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica", while the branch known as Analytical Mechanics was founded in 1788 with Joseph Louis Lagrange's work "Mecanique Analytique". The foundations of Hamiltonian Mechanics, as the general framework for the unified description of different physical theories, such as Mechanics and Optics, were laid in 1834 by William Rowan Hamilton [...] This book was written to cover the subject matter of the course "Theoretical Mechanics III", as it is taught as a compulsory course of the Theoretical Physics course and as an elective course of the Astronomy course to the students of the Physics Department of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The rigorous mathematical foundation of Hamilton Mechanics would require knowledge of concepts from topology, differential geometry and group theory, which are generally not possessed by Physics students. For this the mathematical rigor is necessarily limited, while for the same reason the proofs of some theorems were omitted, for which the reader is referred to the relevant bibliography.
